READING & QUOTES
“To me, it seems important to know and be conscious of the user as a character in the written scenarios.”
I chose this quote because the concept of creating a relatable user persona or character is one of the top things I set out to do when trying to connect with an audience. Developing user personas and characters is crucial to making an emotional connection with an audience and allowing people to feel more attached to what they're experiencing.
"The scenarios are as most stories characterized by causality – an action from the user creates a reaction from the system, starting a new action from the user."
I chose this quote because it reminded me of one of the very first things I learned in any English or writing class, "show, don't tell." This idea is what gets audiences emotionally invested in stories and holds their retention longer. By allowing the audience to visualize and create their own interpretations, they might feel as they have more control over a story and want to be apart of it, rather than being told step by step what is happening.
"In the character-centred story the character is seen as a personage rather than somebody who is the product of the plot and just participating in the story development – instead the character creates the story development."
I chose this quote because it took me a while to truly understand what it meant. I was lost as to how exactly someone becomes the product of a plot, but I understand now that it is about how someone "creates the story" rather than being a part of it. By creating the story, the character is shown to be engaging in the story instead of just describing the actions of the character. This really drives home the idea that creating a character that audiences view as more than a person in the plot, but an emotion that they relate with or conflict with is the best possible way to have an audience connect with a story.
